'Méditations sur la liberté et l'égalité', Zuidam's most recent composition, will receive its first performance on December 18th at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Kleine Zaal). The piece is written on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Amsterdam based Brisk recorder quartet, specialized in the performance on renaissance- and baroque instruments.
The 'Méditations' are a work in progress, of which three movements, roughly 20 minutes, have now been put into score. For Zuidam's standards, the music can be described as exceptionally mellow. It explores possibilities of rhythmical and melodical independence, of objects which seem to move about freely through the air, and are yet somehow interconnected. These layers combine into an effervescent stream of sound, which is seemingly static on the surface, but constantly changing underneath.
